GTTA to host National Schools Championships in late October
The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), will stage the 2019 edition of the National Schools Novices and Elite Teams and Singles Table Tennis Championships from October 25 to 27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
The 2018 edition of these championships had attracted more than 200 participants from 35 schools countrywide, and were aimed at achieving a number of objectives, among which were the following: Providing opportunity for new talents to have an active platform to be showcased and exposed, and to represent their schools. Re-establishing schools’ championships as a basis for the GTTA’s development thrust, by having more players actively participate in table tennis activities, both recreationally and competitively. Establishing an active framework for school competitions through formation of school leagues and teams. Identify, recruit and train student athletes who exhibit a proclivity for this sport with a view to selecting the best talents for training and high-performance programmes of the GTTA, and for selection as possible prospects for national team representation. Fostering camaraderie among students. Promoting/creating healthy lifestyle through the sport of table tennis.
The following categories would feature in this competition: Open Elite Team C/Ships; Open Boys Novices Team C/Ships; Open Girls Novices Team C/ships; Open Boys Novices Singles C/ships; Open Girls Novices Singles C/Ships; Open Elite Boys Singles Championships, and Open Elite Girls Singles Championships.
There would be awards up for grabs, among which are for the Most Disciplined Team, and the Best Dressed and Most Improved team.
Persons so desirous can participate in these championships by contacting the National Sports Commission on Homestretch Avenue or the Guyana Table Tennis Association. The contact persons are Deirdre Edghill and Linden Johnson. The price attached to participation in this activity is $1000 per team, and a receipt will be issued for all such monies collected. All Entries must be submitted by Thursday October 24, 2019.
