Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ ECD tournament: Fireworks expected at finals on Saturday in Haslington

An utterly riveting showdown is anticipated as the curtains come down on the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ ECD tournament on Saturday at the Haslington Market tarmac.
Following two nights of hotly contested elimination matches, four resolute teams remain determined to emerge victorious after the battle for the coveted title and bragging rights for a year has been fought. They are: Vryheid’s Lust, Beterverwagting (BV)-A, Liliendaal Hustlers, and Non Pareil. Interestingly, three of these four remaining entrants would be first-time finalists if they are successful in their semi-final encounters.

Guinness action in progress at the Haslington Tarmac last weekend

Giant killers Vryheid’s Lust, who are responsible for the exit of champions Melanie-B in the quarterfinal section, are scheduled to confront the behemoth Beterverwagting (BV)-A for a place in the final, former champions BV-A having already disposed of the gritty Church Yard unit.
And the dark horse Non Pareil, who edged Victoria Eagles, have secured a showdown date with Liliendaal Hustlers in the second semi-final. The Hustlers, being who they are, have bested Old School in a tense penalty shootout to earn a berth to the final-four section.
Meanwhile, the plate section will crown a new champion following the exit of holders Belfield. The remaining teams are Portmore, Team Cruel, Buxton Diamond, and Uprising.
The first semi-final will pit Portmore against Team Cruel, while Buxton Diamond will battle Uprising.
According to tournament coordinator Rawle Welch, “The semi-finals are expected to be thrilling, and the fact that three of the four teams could possibly seal their maiden appearance in the championship match highlights the growth and competitiveness of the tournament, which certainly bodes well for its future.
“Even the plate section has been very competitive, and features several new teams, and has really brought additional flavour to the event.”
He added, “More importantly, the support from the fans and players has been tremendous, and has exceeded expectations despite the brief timeline that was utilised to stage the tournament following a two-year hiatus; which is also indicative of the passion that surrounds the event.
“Saturday will be no different, as the tournament concludes in front of what is expected to be one of the largest crowds to grace the venue.”
