Six teams walked away with victories while four settled for draw results when the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ tournament continued at the Retrieve Hard Court in the mining town of Linden on Wednesday night.
A look at the battle between High Rollers (red) and Excuse the Rush (yellow)
In the first game of the night, Silver Bullets comfortably defeated Bombers 3-0. Colwyn Drakes opened the scoring in the 4th minute, while Jamaine Samuels, in the 19th, netted a ‘Guinness goal’ that counted for two strikes.
In game two, High Rollers took on Excuse the Rush; and Omar Brewley scored in the 5th, while Jonah Simon followed suit in the 16th for the 2-0 win.
A close encounter resulted in DC Ballers coming away with a 2-1 win against YMCA in game three. Kymani Prince put YMCA ahead in the 14th minute; but, in dramatic fashion, Donovan Francis netted a Guinness goal in the 19th for the win.
Swag Entertainment then brought up the biggest victory of the night’s action by downing Coomacka United 5-2. After Kendolph Lewis netted for Swag in the 7th, the encounter became a battle of the Guinness goals. Lewis struck first, in the 18th, but Ateba Edmunson attempted the comeback for Coomacka with a similar strike in the 19th. With the scores now 3-2 in Swag’s favour, Marley Major netted in the 20th to push their tally to 5.
Realest Ballerz (orange) taking on Pro Ballers (green)
A Roshon Kitt strike in the 7th minute got Realest Ballers past Pro Ballers in a 1-0 affair. Thereafter, Young Gunners and Turf Presidents played to a nil-all draw, while the clash between Hard-ball and Assassa Ballers also ended in a stalemate.
Spaniards romped to a 2-0 victory over LA Ballers to bring the curtains down on the night’s activities. Sigmund Cobena and Tyreek Cummings were the marksmen, finding the back of the net in the 7th and 15th minutes respectively.
Teams in the Linden edition of the Guinness tournament are competing for a $500,000 grand prize. The second, third, and fourth place finishers would receive $400,000, $300,000, and $250,000 respectively, together with the corresponding accolade.
The tournament will conclude on Saturday, May 10th.
