Police in Regional Division 4B are investigating the discovery of a firearm and ammunition found during an intelligence-led operation on Heroes Highway, East Bank Demerara, late Monday night.
The operation was conducted at about 23:40h on Monday, in the vicinity of the Anteater Roundabout at Diamond, EBD. During mobile patrols, Police ranks intercepted a Toyota Axio motor car that was travelling west along the roadway. The vehicle was occupied by two male individuals.
According to Police, while interacting with the occupants, ranks observed suspicious behaviour by the front seat passenger. This observation prompted a search of the vehicle, which was carried out in the presence of both occupants.
During the search, ranks discovered a 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol along with a magazine containing twelve live matching rounds of ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were found beneath the front passenger seat.
The two occupants, a 42-year-old taxi driver of East La Penitence, Georgetown, and a 23-year-old labourer of Tucville, Georgetown, were immediately arrested.
Both men were taken to the Regional Division 4 B Headquarters, where the firearm and ammunition were lodged as exhibits pending further investigations.
Police said the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
