A miner of Konawaruk Backdam, Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) who allegedly found an unlicensed firearm and several rounds of ammunition has promptly handed over same to the Police.

Based on reports gathered, the man was clearing a plot of land when he discovered a bag hidden in the bushes. Upon checking, he found a .22 semi-automatic pistol, a magazine and four live matching rounds of ammunition.
He immediately contacted the Police and handed over the bag but not before going through a tedious interrogation process. The Police are expected to conduct a ballistics test on the weapon to determine if it was used in any criminal activities. Police are continuing their investigations.
In the past, Police have arrested several miners in the Mahdia area with unlicensed firearms and ammunition, leaving Police ranks in F Division (Interior locations) to implement measures for miners to be searched at strategic locations.
