Gunmen attack, rob Berbice businessman

A New Amsterdam businessman was on Tuesday left counting his losses after he and his 22-year-old son were attacked and robbed at gunpoint by three armed men.

The incident occurred around 18:30h Tuesday as 49-year-old Deonarine Albert was returning to his Second Street, Overwinning, New Amsterdam home.

According to reports, the man was about to enter his house when he was confronted by the three armed men.

He was forced inside the building at which point the bandits reportedly demanded he hand over his valuables, but he did not immediately comply.

The bandits, however, turned their attention to his son, who was at home at the time and after they attacked the young man, his father handed over some $620,000 to the men along with his car keys.

This publication was told that the men fled with the businessman’s car, which was later found abandoned at Savannah Park, New Amsterdam. According to reports, the men exited the vehicle and boarded a waiting car and made good their escape. The car, according to Albert, had in it $1,000,000 worth of phone cards, two laptops and five cellular phones, all valued over $2 million. Up to press time, no one had been arrested in connection with the robbery.
