Gunmen invade EBE home

…escape with large quantity of cash, jewellery

An East Bank Essequibo (EBE) couple is now left counting their losses after three gunmen invaded their place of business and robbed them of a large quantity of cash and jewellery.
The couple, 37-year-old Anansa Grimes; and her husband, 44-year-old Beniday Gonsalves along with their daughter were at the Naamyrck, EBE business when the incident occurred at about 20:50h on Tuesday.
Reports are the men went to the business establishment on Tuesday but left. A short while after, the three men returned and held the couple’s daughter at gunpoint.
Guyana Times as told that Grimes heard her daughter screaming in the house which is attached to the business. Upon checking, she saw the men in the house.
However, before she could raise an alarm, one of the men pointed a gun to her head and demanded that she hand over the family’s valuables.
According to reports, the woman handed over a quantity of gold jewellery, cash – both US and Guyana currencies – along with cellphones and phone cards valuing over $1 million.
After hearing the commotion, Gonsalves went into the house but was quickly attacked and beaten before he too was ordered to hand over his valuables.
He was relieved of a gold chain valued $335,000, a diamond ring valued $100,000; GY$35,000; two cellphones; US$120 and €50.
The gunmen then quickly made good their escape on foot in an unknown direction.
The matter is being investigated by the Police.
