Two armed bandits confronted 57-year-old money-changer Wazir Khan at his place of operation on Water Street, Georgetown — in the vicinity of the old KFC building obliquely opposite the Stabroek Market — on Saturday at about 8:10 hrs; and in what can only be described as a daring daylight robbery, relieved him of some $400,000 in local and foreign currencies.
According to reports, Khan, of Lot 7 Back Middle Walk, Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, was plying his trade when two males known to him approached him. One of them pulled a firearm from his waist, pointed it at Khan, and ordered him to hand over his money. Khan had in his possession a quantity of local currency besides pounds sterling and TT and US currencies. He threw it all on the ground, presumably in both panic and in a desperate effort to stymie the robbery attempt; but the gunman’s accomplice quickly picked it all up.
The two perpetrators then both escaped in a southerly direction through the Route 45 Bus Park.
The matter was reported, and an investigation has since been launched.
Only last week, drivers working from the bus parks in Georgetown’s Stabroek Market area decried the absence of GPF ranks or City Constables to address criminal activities which are reportedly pervasive at the minibus parks.
