Guyana’s youth boxing team did well to recapture the overall title at the Winfield Braithwaite School Boys and Juniors tournament that was hosted over the last weekend.
To make matters even better, 50-52kg class boxer Jeremiah Duncan was adjudged best boxer, adding to the accolades that Guyana carted off on Sunday evening.
The tournament, which commenced last Friday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), witnessed participation from Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, and the Bahamas, apart from Guyana’s 17-member team.
Given his accolade at the end of the three-night competition, Duncan led the charge for Guyana with an entertaining victory over Andre Curtis of The Bahamas in the 50-52kg class. The closest thing the Guyanese could get to a knockout was the referee stopping the contest in the third round with things set in the Guyanese teenager’s favour.
Earlier in the competition, Eon Bancroft Jr of the Young Achievers exhibited great skill in his victory over St. Lucia’s Harve Charlemagne. Bancroft did enough for the referee to stop the fight early in the 60-63kg bout.
Joshua Thambaran of the Rose Hall Jammers gym was also among Guyana’s victors, this time in the 57-60kg category. Opposing Prince Charles of Trinidad and Tobago, Thambaran got a heated start, and capitalised on it enough for the referee to stop the bout just over a minute into the contest.
Emanuel Pompey was another of Guyana’s shining stars on the final night of the Caribbean youth tournament. Pompey defeated Bahamian Elijah Smith in the 91+kg class to add to Guyana’s gold medals.
And Elijah Smith’s teammate Jailen Younge exacted revenge for Smith’s defeat when he thumped Guyana’s Tiquan Sampson. Another Bahamian, Jaden Younge, also tasted victory when he defeated Guyana’s Dwayne Baptiste.
Earlier in the tournament, Trinidad and Tobago had much to celebrate when Chris Persaud thumped Juhuan Haniff of Guyana in a 60-63kg bout.
