Guyana hopes to take spotlight in Miss World Pageant this Sunday

The 66th edition of the Miss World Pageant will be held on Sunday at the Theatre at MGM National Harbour in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and Guyana’s representative Nuriyyih Gerrard is optimistic that she will be named in the top 25.

Although she was not successful in most of the preliminaries, her Beauty with aguyana Purpose Project was selected in the top 24. Nevertheless, based on pageantry, the delegate had to impress the judges in the various challenges including the fitness challenge and talent. Unfortunately, Guyana fell short in these aspects.

One hundred and seventeen young women from all over the world will be competing for the prestigious Grand Slam title. This is the second time the United States will have the honour of hosting the pageant. The last time the USA won the coveted title was in 2010, when Alexandria Mills took home the title.

More than half of the world’s nations will be participating in this year’s pageant that’s all about intelligence, style, talent and beauty. All of the delegates will participate in several fast track events including talent, multimedia challenge, sport, top model and the all important Beauty with a Purpose.

The winner’s of each fast track challenge will automatically be advanced into the Top 20. The Miss World finale will be the first major television production to take place at the beautiful new entertainment venue at MGM National Harbour.

The Miss World 2016 contest will be televised live across the world on December 18.

The pageant was established in 1951 and is the largest international competition in existence bringing together representatives of 140 nations. It is also one of the most publicised and successful competitions in the world.

In 1972, the Beauty with a Purpose ethos was incorporated into Miss World by Julia Morley (Chairman and CEO, Miss World Limited) and has since been responsible for countless hours of impactful humanitarian efforts and has raised over a billion dollars for charities around the globe.

Under Morley’s leadership, Miss World boasts over a billion viewers each year and has positively impacted tourism, foreign investment, philanthropy, and more.

The delegates tipped for the final 25 include Mexico, Philippines, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, India, United States, Venezuela, Russia, Colombia and Thailand.
