The number of positive coronavirus cases continues to rise in Guyana, with 21 new infections reported as of Monday. The Health Ministry shared that confirmed cases have moved up to 69,468.
In the Health Ministry’s dashboard, there are five persons in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 808 in home isolation, 25 in institutional isolation and two in institutional quarantine.
The death toll from the virus remains at 1270, after the latest fatality on Sunday. There are 838 active coronavirus cases across the country. A total of 23 patients has been hospitalised – inclusive of 15 at the Infectious Diseases Hospital.
An analysis shows new cases dispersed among four regions, with two in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), three in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 11 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), and five in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
There were no reported hikes in Regions One (Barima-Waini), Five (Mahaica-Berbice), Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
There continues to be an underestimating of cases recorded daily, according to Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony on Monday. This has been the result of reduced testing since persons are not presenting themselves at the sites, coupled with the prevalence of home test kits.
Vaccination figures show that 444,769 or 86.7 per cent of adults have taken a first dose, while some 344,481 or 67.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.
For adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, 35,326 first doses and 25,847, or 35.4 per cent, second doses have been administered.
Vaccination for children in the five to 11 category shows 5782 first doses or 5.7 per cent. Only 1232 or 1.2 per cent have returned for their second shot. In addition, 70,689 persons have returned for their booster shots thus far.
According to the recent figures of the World Health Organisation (WHO), some 565,207,160 confirmed cases were reported globally along with 6,373,739 deaths.
In the Region of the Americas, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased to 168,183,683 while the death toll has gone up to 2,779,572.
