Guyana Olympic Association hosts prosperous Sports Journalism seminar 

A One-day sports Journalism Seminar organized by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) was held on Saturday May 7, 2016 at the Guyana Olympic Association office, High Street, Kingston.
The seminar which was intended for sports reporters and journalists to sharpen their skills in sports journalism saw a strong participation from the local media fraternity.
The facilitators for the day’s event were Bert Wilkinson, Carolyn Walcott, Noel Adonis, Donald Duff and Leon Horatio.
The programme was divided into two sessions and various issues were raised including the basic requirements for sports reporting, problems facing reporters and why is sports coverage important to national development.

The first session was facilitated by long standing Sports Editors Duff and Horatio and covered issues such as “What is sports journalism and why is sports coverage important for national development.”
During this interactive session, sport reporters and journalists highlighting the fact that they are the key to putting the spotlight on our local athletes while educating the public about their various accomplishments and challenges. The local journalists expressed their frustration with the miniature efforts being put into the sport broadcasts and print since sports reporting indirectly contributes to the development of our athletes.
Many local journalists believe that there is room for improvement and that more investments are needed by media houses in assisting them to carry out their tasks effectively and efficiently.
The second session involved a productive discussion about the ethical principles in reporting and sports reporting; originality of stories and online reporting. This session was conducted by Carolyn Wallcott and Bert Wilkinson.
The day was very interactive and all participants were fully involved.
The GOA promised a follow-up session in the not too distant future.
The seminar concluded with participating journalists being presented with certificates.
