“Guyana Open keeps Golf on the sports radar” – Minister Norton
– Minister happy to see schools participating
Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Sport, Dr. George Norton said the upcoming Guyana Cup Golf tournament set for November 4 and 5, should be hailed for keeping the sport on the radar; both locally and internationally.
The honorable Minister, who was speaking at the tournament’s launch on Thursday at the Marriott International Hotel, lauded the executives of the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) for marinating the competition’s caliber after so many years of promoting the sport and the golfers alike.
“This could not have been done without lots of commitment and hard work. The Guyana Open Golf tournament keeps golf on the sports radar of Guyanese and greatly contributes to the development of Golf in Guyana”, said the Minister.
Minister Norton said he was also pleased with the initiative of the organizers to include schools in the tourney this year as it’s a great move to marry academics with golf. “There is a need for great involvement in sports, in and out of schools; it’s something I’ve been very vocal about since taking responsibility of sports in Guyana. I believe that we’ve got to start at the level of schools,” declared the Minister.
LGC President Hilbert Shields said that the event will continue to produce a number of top golfers as it has been doing in the past while creating a system where persons can come and learn the sport from pro golfers; whether it is for fun or competition.
Shields said that he was happy to have the support of the government along with other sponsors who have been on board the Cup over the years. He added that the competition has allowed the sport to reach all facets of society while playing a role in the continued growth of the Tourism sector of Guyana.
Meanwhile, tournament sponsor Ganesh Parts and General Store, CEO Chatram Persaud said his company, who is an official distributor of the world-famous Bridgestone Tires, is delighted to have jump onboard the Guyana Cup as it has been one of the premier sport events held annually in Guyana.
Persaud said just as the Bridgestone brand has been a reliable brand over the years, so too was he looking to be a part of the Cup in the future, saying Ganesh Parts fully supports the tournament and will continue to work along with others in the fraternity to ensure that Guyana takes golf to the next stage.
The Guyana Cup Golf tournament will feature golfers, both amateur and pros from across the country as well as different parts of the world, duking it out in two days of intense competition on November 4 and 5 at the Lusignan Golf Course.
