Following Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)’s successful debut in Guyana, Fight Central 592’s Michael “Mike” Singh strongly believes that Guyana can become the fight central of the Caribbean.
Speaking to this publication during the event on Sunday last at the Giftland Mall,
Liliendaal, Singh indicated that the debut was historic, and “this is basically a launch to show that Guyana is ready for MMA, we have fighters we have athletes to this calibre.”
Singh believes that the debut was successful and based on what he has seen Guyana can be the fight central of the Caribbean with the support of the regional countries.
“This is an indication that we could lean on Trinidad, we could lean on the Caribbean fighters to enhance the local MMA product we have. We have the foundation, we have strong people we have the will, the fighting spirit and that is the main reason we call it Fight Central because Guyana will become the fight central of the Caribbean,” Singh said.
While the debut was historic, there is more coming to Guyana as Singh promises fights every quarter of the year. “The next bouts we are going to have is July 8, you will see Brazilian MMA fighters, Surinamese, Venezuelans, Trinidadians and Jamaicans… at the end of the day MMA is here to stay,” the Central 592 boss said.
In envisioning the future of the sport, Singh pointed out that “this sport will go all the way to the top” noting that “our vision right now is having a UFC fighter in Las Vegas, Madison Square Garden, at the end of the day look at Conor McGregor, Rhonda Rousey, these are regular fighters that people gave opportunities apart from their talent.”
The former Guyana Amateur Basketball Association President highlighted that “Guyanese we have it; Linden, Kwakwani I know we got the talent, the strength, the will, we achieve a lot with little resources much less if we have a structure where we could catapult our guys. Both male and female we will have a core of guys doing karate, judo, jujitsu and the Brazilian community here is strong and they will appreciate it so I think the sky is the limit.”
The Fight Central 592 boss believes that the talent here is immense after seeing what we can do with limited resources.
The local MMA fraternity is also setting their sights on establishing a local Federation that will manage this sport.
On Sunday April 23, the Giftland Mall came alive with four eye catching MMA fights with six Trinidadian fighters and one each from Barbados and Guyana.
