Guyana secures spot for 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games

Guyana National men’s and Women’s Table Tennis Teams have secure qualification spots for the 2022 Birmingham commonwealth games. In a significant feat which was communicated by the ITTF and Commonwealth games association to GOA president Juman Yassin, the Guyana men’s and women’s national table tennis team have been rewarded for consistent performance over the period 2018 to 2020.

With three team spots available for the Caribbean region the Caribbean championships Guyana having been selected leaves only two team spots available to form part of the sixteen teams to qualify for the commonwealth team competition.
This elaborate qualification system instituted by the Commonwealth games federation and the ITTF. This qualification model seeks to reward teams that have had consistent performance over period is geared towards ensuring continental representation and offers different paths through world rank, regional qualification, individual and doubles and host country qualification.
The squad will consist of 4 male players and 4 female players in each team players who will play doubles and singles competition at the games
Table tennis Guyana has been a consistent performer at the commonwealth games after team made its debut in the 2006 edition of the games held in Melbourne Australia, 2010 edition of the Delhi India games, 2014 Glasgow games and the 2018 edition in Gold Coast.
GTTA President Godfrey Munroe commented, “With the covid pandemic the decision was made to limit the number of teams moving forward. So for qualification, participation at the games will become a key feature. This announcement is significant since it comes on the backs of the of both men and women team performances in international competition for 2018 to 2021 period.”
The games will be held inBirmingham England from July 28 to August 8 2022.
