Guyana sees 5.6% hike in visitor arrivals in August

– over 48,000 passengers processed

Visitor arrivals to Guyana continue to climb, with local tourism authorities reporting that the country welcomed some 48,582 persons during August 2026.
This figure represents a 5.6 per cent increase compared to August 2025 and continues the country’s strong tourism growth trajectory, according to the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) on Friday.
Overall, it was noted that the year-to-date percentage for January to August 2026 stands at 11 per cent when compared to 2025 visitor arrivals for the same period.
According to the officials, leisure travel remained the largest contributor to arrivals, accounting for 62 per cent of visitors, followed by business with 14 per cent and other at 24 per cent.

Based on market share distribution, the majority of the visitors were from the United States, at 39 per cent. The Caribbean came in second with 33 per cent, followed by Latin America with nine per cent, Canada with seven per cent, Europe with five per cent, and the remaining six per cent going to other markets.
This rise in arrivals was supported by several key activities. This includes the Global Super League (GSL) Cricket tournament, which extended into early August and drew international fans and teams, reinforcing Guyana›s growing reputation as a sporting destination.
Additionally, the return of diaspora visitors for the August vacation period also contributed significantly, reflecting the strength of family and cultural ties.
“These activities strengthened Guyana’s image as a destination that blends cultural depth, sporting appeal, and community connections while sustaining momentum toward the country’s projected milestone of over 500,000 visitors by year-end 2026,” the statement detailed.
Previously, the Tourism Ministry had reported 45,127 visitors for July 2026 – the highest number ever recorded for this month in the history of Guyana’s tourism, marking an 11.1 per cent increase compared to July 2025.
Meanwhile, the August figures align with a growing trend regarding visitor arrivals in the country. Just last month, the GTA reported an increase in arrivals during the first six months of 2026, with 226,463 visitors recorded from January to June, representing a 12 per cent year-to-date increase.
The Tourism Authority credited major events and conferences for sustaining travel demand during the first half of this year, including the closing of the Diamond Jubilee Visual Arts Exhibition, Guyana Restaurant Week, International Building Expo, Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean (ICAC) Annual Conference, Voting Rights & Electoral Justice Conference, Econome Business Mixer, Caribbean Port State Control Conference (CPSCC), and the WeLead Association Conference, among others.
Moreover, it was reported that Guyana welcomed 40,002 visitors in June 2026, representing a 16.8 per cent increase compared to June 2025. This trend, the GTA noted, continues the country’s strong tourism growth trajectory.
