Guyana slump to 30-run loss against Leewards

Guyana Under-19 on Saturday lost its first game of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional U-19 limited over tournament to Leeward Islands in St. Vincent by 30 runs.

Batting first Leewards made 222-9, start as the opening pair of Ross Powell (38) and Tyrone Williams added 104 for the first wicket. Kofi James, who batted at number three, got 32 but after his demise Guyana made constant inroads and restricted their opponents scoring rate. Left arm spinners Akenie Adams and part time spinner Bhaskar Yadram was the leading bowlers for Guyana with two wickets each.

In reply Guyana were bowled out for 192 with four overs remaining, with the two youngest members of the team, Joshua Persaud and Bhaskar Yadram scored 44 runs each to finish as the principal scorers. Opening fast bowlers Kian Pemberton (4-29) and Camron Pennyfeather (3-29) were the main wreckers picking up seven wickets between them.

In the other matches, Trinidad and Tobago hammered ICC Americas by 151 runs, being spearheaded by Kirstan Kallicharan (75) as they reached 279-9 off 50 overs batting first. Jonathan Bootan chipped in with 32 as Aran Pathmanathan and Romel Shahzad claimed two wickets apiece.

ICC Americas were routed for a paltry 128 in 32.4 overs, with only Abrassh Khan (50)of the batsmen making any significant contribution. Jarlanie Seales led Trinidad’s attack with 4-33 while Negus Smith and Dejour Charles supported with figures of 3-40 and 2-45 respectively.

An all-round special by Windward Island player Ryan John guided his team to a three wicket win over Barbados. John took three wickets as Barbados were dismissed for 178 all out before returning to hit a responsible unbeaten 49 as Windwards reached 181-7 in 46.3 overs.

West Indies youth all-rounder Shemar Springer made 63 for Barbados and was assisted by Joshua Bishop (35) and Dominic Drakes (26). Darron Nedd and John got three wickets each for Windwards, who was led by Emmanuel Stewart (54). Joshua Bishop got three wickets while Deswin Currency and Tremaine Harris collected two each.

The fourth round will be played on Monday with three matches scheduled for the day.
