Guyana to host 2020 Caribbean Mini and Pre Cadet Table Tennis Championships

– ITTF Caribbean Hopes Training and Selection Camp also on cards

The Guyana Table Tennis Association and by extension Guyana was given the stamp of approval by the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation and the Latin American Federation to host the 2020 edition of Caribbean Mini and Pre Cadet Table Tennis Championships and Caribbean Hopes Training and Selection Camp in the summer of 2020.

The Caribbean Mini and Pre- cadet championships forms the incubator for Regional table tennis engages girls and boys between the ages of 11 and 13 years and under players in the Caribbean region. It is a signature competition on the GTTA’s and Caribbean calendar of events, since its forms the basis for regional table tennis supremacy and incubator for the development of young emerging table tennis talents and platform from which all of the region table tennis stars commence their journey.
The hosting of these games represents a long term investment in Guyana’s Table tennis development, since as hosts of this tournament, Guyana has the possibility of being able to double the amount of players fielded in competition which would see thirty two players.
The plan is to use these developmental championships as basis to develop a nucleus of players who can be selected to represent Guyana in future international competitions and to establish a succession plan at the youth level, this will see focus strategy the development of players at the primary level ( between the ages of (6-13) in view of establishing a national Hopes program thus synchronizing the GTTA programs with ITTF.

With junior Olympic cycle games world junior circuit events being played at the cadet level it has become of critical importance that developmentally Guyana establish a structured feeder system and program if we are to continue to be successful and become more competitive.

ITTF Caribbean World Hopes Training and Selection Camp
Hosting of these games will see and intensification concentrating on development of players from the primary school realm and a concentration acceleration of the GTTA national table tennis for schools’ program.

Guyana last hosted the 8th edition of the championships in 2013 The GTTA fielded and develop a nucleus of thirty 32 players, the likes of Miguel Wong, Jeremy Singh, Khalil Ninvalle, Simran Bissu, Jordan Conway, Davonna Bess, Sandor Kanhai, Vincent Henry, Khalid Gobin, Tyrese Jeffrey, Joshua Norton, Shamar Williams and Jamal Butts. Girls’ Under-13: Kristie Lopes, Priyanna Ramdhani, Davonna Bess, Brittney Bunbury and Annabelle DeFreitas; Boys’ Under-11: Tyriq Saunders, Terrence Rausch, Kaysan Ninvalle, Niron Bissu, Yeudistir Persaud, Hemant Dalip, Ty Dickson, Brandon Jaikarran, Navendra Persaud, Isaiah Layne, Khalid Glasgow, Anfernee George, Sherwin Atherly; Girls’ Under-11: Selenas Jackman, Nevaeh Clarkston, Abigail Martin and Charlia Webb which served well in terms of developing a core of players.
The hopes training camp which will be held eight (8) days before the champions will be conducted by an ITTF expert and will see the Caribbean’s best 11 years and under boys and girls and their coaches participating in high intensity camp. The program aimed at providing training, nurturing and early exposure to young talents will be held the eight (8) days. The Program will be used to select the best two Caribbean and 11-years and under boys and girls to participate in the Latin American world hopes training and competition slated for later in 2020 training will be two three hour sessions per day; each day commencing at 9.00am and concluding at 6.30pm. Additionally, coaches attended workshops and seminars, followed by a Challenge tournament. This offers Guyana the opportunity to again field a quantum of layers and expose our coaches
The ITTF world Hopes programme targets players in the Under 11 category which is the first step on the road to high performance conducted under ITTF Education and Training Programme it is an ITTF global continental programme which offers young players selected from the different continents a support pathway to benefit from training competition exposure and equipment support, as an induction to the ITTF development program ITTF Hopes program; ITTF Rough Diamond ITTF with the Future in Mind.
The GTTA will put forth its strategies for the hosting of these events.
Caribbean Under 13 boys bronze medalist Colin Wong bronze, along with young talents Jasmine Billingy, Samara Sukhai, Akira Watson, Quenna Torrington, Malachi Moore Ebo Mc Neil, Dhanesh Persaud, Alexander De Abreu Neil players with international experience among other emerging talents will form Guyana’s squad in preparation for the games.
