Guyana’s National Track and Field Faculty at Leonora, West Coast Demerara will be set ablaze as the country is expected to host the South American Under-20 Championships in June.
This comes on the heels of Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) President, Aubrey Hutson’s trip to Brazil for the Consudatle Congress which is hosted in Sao Paulo.
By virtue of this announcement, Hutson noted that the country is expected to have an influx of intense competition, something that we have seen over the years but only to be increased at a rapid rate as the world class facility will be on show.
When Guyana Times Sport contacted the man at the helm of the AAG, he was in high spirits as he unfolded a list of the positives that can be found from this hosting.
“We have to throw our hat in the ring and show the world that we are here and we are ready. I see a lot of positives coming from this like exposure; our athletes will be exposed to international competition, something some of them may not have been seen by them before, we saw when we brought two Peruvians and the high level of competition they brought and challenged Cleveland Forde. Also it will test our athletes, the Shantoba Bright and company especially on home soil. I think this will also be a good way for our fans to see international athletes without travelling and see where our athletes are and actually judge for their own,” the AAG boss said.
Hutson went on to say that this will also create the opportunity for us to bid for more international championships including the PanAm Games or even the Commonwealth Games, highlighting that this is just a stepping stone for us and we have to ensure that we are up to standard when it comes to putting on a good show.
This championship will be held on June 3 and 4. Members of the South American competition committee will be visiting Guyana shortly, even as early as within the next two weeks to inspect and assist in the preparation for the championships.
