Guyana to host workshop on international arbitration

The Government of Guyana, through the Attorney General’s Chambers in partnership with the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP), will host an “International Arbitration in Practice” workshop in Georgetown from August 26 to 29. This workshop, the second phase of a capacity-building program launched in 2023, aims to further develop the skills of Guyanese lawyers in international arbitration, particularly in light of the new Arbitration Act 2024.
Thirty-five participants from key institutions, including the Guyana Revenue Authority, the Natural Resources Ministry, the Amerindian Affairs Ministry, the Housing Ministry, the Arbitration Unit, the Maritime Administration Department, the Tourism, Industry and Commerce Ministry, and the Bar Associations, are set to take part in the sessions. The workshop will focus on the practical application of the new law and address the challenges and opportunities it presents.
Five experts from ISLP, affiliated with international law firms Winston & Strawn and Chaffetz Lindsay, will lead the training. Their involvement is part of a broader effort to equip State Counsel and legal professionals with the knowledge needed to effectively implement and apply the new arbitration law. This initiative aims to enhance Guyana’s reputation as a secure and attractive destination for foreign investment, reinforce confidence in its legal system, and uphold the rule of law in accordance with public policy.
The training benefits from the financial and technical support of the Advocates for International Development’s Rule of Law Expertise UK (ROLE UK) Programme and UKAid.
