Guyana’s health bar: Nutrition Crave shines for promoting healthy eating

Introducing healthy and delicious meals where persons do not have to compromise on their diet or busy schedule, Nutrition Crave has been creating a buzz in the local food world.

Founder of Nutrition Crave, Renecia John

From their Instagram-worthy meals with well-presented ingredients, the relatively new business has taken the food market by storm in promoting nutritious meals. Filled with organic ingredients, healthy grains and fresh vegetables, it has created an avenue for persons to maintain a healthy diet while on the go without succumbing to fast food options.
Speaking on their journey, Founder of the business Renecia John highlighted that the business was birthed after she had difficulties finding such meals in Guyana, having travelled abroad where it was easily accessible.
John expounded, “It started just a little of year ago. I realised that there was a need for healthy eating in Guyana since I would have travelled with stomach issues. Whenever I go to purchase stuff, I realised that there is no way I could have ordered something custom prepared for me, like I could’ve added what I wanted and taken out what it is that I don’t want. From travelling, I realised that it was being offered in other parts of the world but not available to the Guyanese public. That’s how I started.”

Healthy options available on their menu for mindful meals

“We just started out with the smoothies and sandwiches actually and then started introducing the salads. We found that many persons were in the same place that I was, looking for something that they can eat on a daily basis, not always having to prepare it at home. If they didn’t have the time to prepare or if they’re on a diet, they don’t have to compromise. They can always stop by at Crave.”
However, the business was started during the COVID pandemic – a period where there was great uncertainty and economic challenges globally. Since then, Crave has grown to newer heights and consumers are loving the products.

“It’s something that I enjoy doing and it is my livelihood. Starting the business during COVID, it was challenging I think mentally because persons weren’t really leaving their homes. For the few that we’re leaving, we didn’t know how it would have gone. What I knew at that time was there was a need for healthy eating since everyone was concerned about their health, well-being and immune system,” John shared.

Renecia shared that persons are allowed to build their own meal, or they can choose from the healthy selection of wraps, sandwiches, soups, pressed juices, salad bowls, and smoothies. There are also juices for detox, recovery, vitality and cleansing.
“At Crave, we try to offer everything persons would want to eat that is healthy, from salads, smoothies, fresh juices using no sugar or water, wraps, chia puddings, and sandwiches. As Guyanese, one of the things I realise is that everyday we’re being exposed to social media and we’re taking a look at what is there in terms of healthy eating. We want to be able to try it as well and know that there is somewhere we can purchase it. It’s not that we’re disregarding our local dishes but we can also have new things as well.”
With an extended menu, she said they are able to cater for needs of persons who have specific dietary requirements. It has also shed light on the myriad of persons suffering from some form of complication or another.
She explained, “By my surprise, there are so many persons having complications and stomach issues. We’re able as a staff to guide them and say what they can have or shouldn’t have. It makes it very simple and easy to understand what they’re going through.”
