Guyanese boxers advance to SA Games semi-finals

Two of Guyana’s fast-rising boxers have proven why they are amongst the best in the nation, as they participated in the 2018 South American Games, in Cochabamba, Bolivia on Sunday evening.

Colin “Superman” Lewis and Keevin Allicock, who often compete against each other on the home turf, found themselves in separate weight classes when they were ready to face off with the seemingly better South American opponents.
The first of the pair to grace the Bolivian ring in the bantamweight class was Allicock, who faced off with Lucas Fernandez of Uruguay. Allicock, who was clearly in control of the match-up from the first bell, connected jab after jab to the Venezuelan, leaving him to use blocks and holds as his only resort. As such, the winner’s announcement was no shock to the spectators. The 19-year-old junior sportsman of the year has secured his spot on the Bolivia 2018 podium with at least a bronze medal.
Competing in the light welterweight category, ‘Superman’ Lewis found himself in the ring with Venezuelan Jose Palacios Medina. The intense match-up saw both parties throwing punch after punch and at the end of their allotted rounds, it was unclear to the boisterous fans who would come out victorious. Eventually, it was the Guyanese superman who was announced as the winner. Like Allicock, Lewis has guaranteed himself a spot on the Bolivian podium.
In the respective semi-finals, Allicock will come up against Carlos Maria Alanis of Argentina while Lewis faces off with John Lennon of Colombia.
