Guyanese boxers deliver historic clean sweep at IGG

Guyana’s boxers made an emphatic statement at the 2026 Inter Guiana Games (IGG) in Suriname with a clean sweep of their bouts as the sport made its historic debut at the regional competition since the Games were conceptualised in 1967.
Under the guidance of coach Lennox Daniels, the Guyanese pugilists delivered a commanding performance, winning all five contests against their Surinamese counterparts and underlining the country’s growing strength in the sport.
With boxing contested between Guyana and Suriname, the programme also featured several exhibition bouts that entertained spectators before the competitive action took centre stage on the lawns of the Anthony Nesty Stadium.
Josh Chester got things going for Guyana, opening the country’s account with a unanimous decision victory over Shane Karijoikromo after three rounds of action.
However, Guyana’s remaining boxers took a more aggressive approach, ensuring that the night ended earlier than anticipated.
Akella Macey was next to impress, forcing the referee to stop his contest against Chidera Williams in the second round, as his relentless pressure proved too much for his opponent.

Ken Harvey, meanwhile, showed why he is regarded as one of the Caribbean’s and South America’s most promising young boxers, stopping Migael Janki in the opening round of their 67kg contest.
Kenisha Klass also delivered a commanding performance, taking two rounds to put away Ameya Mangal and extend Guyana’s winning run.
In the final competitive bout of the evening, Ryan Rogers ensured that the Guyanese contingent completed its clean sweep, picking up a unanimous decision victory over Zahir Timpico after three rounds.
The results provided a fitting introduction for boxing at the Games, with Guyana’s fighters combining technical ability, ring craft and aggression to leave little doubt about their superiority on the night.
Following the competition, coach Daniels praised his boxers for their performances, expressing satisfaction with the way they represented Guyana and contributed to the continued development of the sport.
