Guyanese boxers hit back powerfully on 2nd night

On the second night of the “Nuff Cuff” Caribbean Schoolboys/Juniors Boxing Championship, Guyanese boxers hit back in a bid to retain their status of being the overall winners of the tournament which is being staged at the National Gymnasium.
In the international bouts, six in total, the Guyanese contingent won three out of their five clashes; the three victories all came against Trinidadian opponents. In the first matchup St Lucia’s Kimlyn Martie came out the winner of a closely contested 63Kg fight against Guyanese Emmanuel Pompey. They duo traded jabs and crosses in the early rounds but eventually Martie was able to wrest control from Pompey to be adjudged the winner.
Richard Howard scored Guyana’s first international victory when he produced a dominant display to defeat Trinidadian Abdul Taylor via a well-deserved unanimous decision in the 40Kg School Boys Final. Likewise, Howard’s teammate, Leon Moore won against Tyreek Hosein in the 44Kg School Boys category in an evenly contested fight that saw the duo trade resounding punches throughout the bout; Moore scored with more accurate jabs and crosses to come out on top.

Action in the Caribbean Schoolboys Boxing Championship at the National Gymnasium

Pre-tournament favourite Nyrell Hosein representing Trinidad, easily overcame Patrick Harvey of Guyana when the two fighters clashed in the 46Kg Schoolboys Category, Hosein showed why he was touted by his coaches as being a top contender to medal at the tournament when he totally out-boxed Harvey in a one sided affair.
Juan Rodriguez another pre-tournament favourite also tipped to medal, registered Trinidad and Tobago’s second win of the night when he defeated Guyana’s representative in the 52Kg category, Shemar Hutson. Rodriguez had his opponent rocking at one point with a one-two combination followed by consecutive jabs.
However Guyana had the last hurrah of the night as Omar Pollard emerged victorious against T&T’s Edwin Felix in the 54Kg Category to register the host’s third victory of the night.
Earlier in the local bouts, Vickasy Graham defeated Moses Crawford when they clashed in the 25Kg Schoolboys category, while in the 32Kg weight class Sean Graham claimed victory against Laterell Richards and Shaquancy Wright defeated his opponent Neil Garraway in the 38 Kg clash.
In the heavier weight classes, Junior Hyman lost against Isaiah Moore in the 50Kg bout. In a split decision fight, Jaqwuan Milo pipped Mark Crawford to take the spoils in the 52Kg category.
Speaking to Guyana Times Sport, head coach of the Guyana team, Terrence Poole said that Guyana is well on their way to defending their title as overall Tournament winners and pointed out that the final night is well set for his fighters to claim medals.
