A Guyanese national was among two persons killed in an early morning accident along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, Trinidad and Tobago, on Sunday.
He has been identified as 26-year-old Rajendra Persaud of Crane, West Coast Demerara. Guyana Times understands that the young man was living and working in Trinidad.
According to reports coming out of the country, the accident occurred sometime around 08:00h near Chase Village, along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway.
A T&T online news report informed that two vehicles were proceeding north along the north-bound lane of the highway when a black Toyota Hilux attempted to merge from the left lane to the right lane.
As a result, the driver of the pick-up came into contact with another truck, which was in the right lane at the time. The two vehicles then hit the median and violently came to a stop.
The two passengers of the other truck, Persaud and a resident of Port of Spain, did not survive the accident.
Meanwhile, the online news report said that the Police and emergency health services were notified and the driver of the Hilux truck was detained after officers noticed the scent of alcohol on his breath.
Further reports revealed that the driver of the Hilux was taken into custody and administered a breathalyser test which he failed. He is currently being kept at the Freeport Police Station as investigations continue.
