Guyanese prepare for Mash celebrations 2019 with unity in mind

As the much anticipated and exuberant Republic Day is celebrated, the citizens of Guyana have highs hopes for unification.
Thousands of Guyanese are expected to flock the city streets to witness the colourful costume and float parade. This year’s celebration is themed “Celebrate Mash 49 with victory in mind – rediscovering El Dorado”.
Guyana Times caught up with some very excited persons in the capital city on Friday, who disclosed their plans to be a part of the massive Mashramani parade, as well as their expectations of seeing an abundance of unity while on the streets.
One enthusiastic citizen, who asked not be named, remarked that her favourite part of the Republic’s Day celebrations is seeing the cooperation and unity among the different races in Guyana.
“My favourite thing about this Guyanese celebration is seeing everybody coming together; different races celebrating that day. In this Mash I expect to see more activities with the children and even the adults taking part, and different Ministries in the Government” she said.
Meanwhile, other persons related their plans to spend quality time with their friends and family at home, but nevertheless expressed excitement for the event. One passerby stated, “I like the Mash holiday, it’s a lot of excitement and it’s an exposure to the lil youths that are coming up today, I feel something good about this event”.
Guyana will be celebrating 49 years of being a Republican nation and numerous events were planned and executed to usher in this year’s festivity.
These include the Children’s Mashramani and Float Parade, as well as the Soca, Chutney, Calypso Monarch competitions and others.
The anxious Guyanese population will be up for a treat, as the various Ministries, including the Education Ministry and the Social Cohesion Ministry, as well as the People’s Progressive Party Civic participate in this year’s massive float parade which will enroute through the streets of Georgetown, displaying the creativity and talents of Guyana’s people in the form of floats and stylish costumes.
