Guyanese, Venezuelan women arrested following brawl at drinking spot
A Guyanese woman along with a female Venezuelan national were arrested following a brawl at a popular drinking spot in Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Both ladies would have sustained injuries as a result of the fight which stemmed from “name calling”.
The Spanish-speaking foreigner was celebrating her birthday with other Venezuelans at Lance’s Bar located at Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), when the incident took place.
Reports are that between midnight and 03:00h on Saturday morning, the group of Venezuelans were at one section of the bar when the Guyanese along with her friends entered the premises.
The two groups were seated some distance apart when the Guyanese woman allegedly started to taunt the Venezuelan women who were minding their own business.
According to the owner of the bar, the foreigners did not engage in any cross-talking with the Guyanese woman.
The insults intensified and some hours later, the Spanish speaking women exited the building and stood in the yard to continue having their alcoholic beverages.
Shortly after, the Guyanese along with her friends left their seats and sat on the benches, closer to the Venezuelans. The taunting continued and this eventually led to a scuffle.
“I was not there outside and when I was going outside, I was told by persons in here to remain indoors, but I know they were fighting with each other. I am not taking sides, I did not witness the fight in actuality but the Guyanese began troubling the Venezuelans who tried to ignore them the entire time they were here. I was later told that the police were called in because it was at that time I was closing up that the fight started,” the proprietress related.
Commander of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) Assistant Police Commissioner Simon McBean, when contacted by this publication, confirmed that the two women were taken into Police custody after their alleged altercation took place.
He noted that they had been taken to the nearby hospital to receive treatment for their wounds and obtain the necessary medical documents as investigations into the matter continue.
