Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers Football League: $500,000 on the line in today’s clash between CWSS, Golden Grove
The stage is set for today’s ultimate showdown in the Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers Football tournament, wherein Christianburg Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) and Golden Grove Secondary clash for a chance to clinch a $500,000 grand prize.
Golden Grove Secondary are thus far unbeaten in this tournament, but two drawn results mean they would need a victory against Christianburg Wismar to win it all. However, since falling to North Ruimveldt Multilateral, the Linden outfit had been faultless, making for an entertaining final on the line.
Tournament Organizer Troy Mendonca, who has a similar assessment of the situation, has predicted a ‘pulsating’ finale to this tournament.
“It is such a pleasing thing for my colleague to say ‘a final’ in a league competition, and that speaks volumes to how competitive the competition was; and very rare you have the least game of leagues determining the winner of the league, and that in itself – like I said – speaks volumes of this competition,” Mendonca shared during an engagement on Thursday last.
He added, “Over the past seven weeks, these two teams that are sitting here with us today have demonstrated a level of consistency and development, from day one to day six. And so I said that to sat that, come Sunday, we expect a pulsating final between Golden Grove Secondary from the East Coast, and Christianburg Wismar, from Linden.”
The respective team captains have displayed an eagerness to take the top spot in the league. Golden Grove’s Kellon Croal has expressed, “Through the past weeks, we have worked hard, and I’m so happy that we reach to the finals; and we’re going to put in our best and come out with a victory on Sunday.”
“It has been a very thrilling experience since this competition has started, and we hope to come out on top this Sunday and take the victory back home to Linden,” CWSS’ Devon Gilbert has said.
Among the talents to look out for at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground today will be CWSS’ Khristian Louis and Kelvin Hintzen, who have been formidable for their team at the front. Demoll Warner, with quite a few goals under his belt, has been a force in the midfield, and Golden Grove’s goalkeeper Emanuel Lewis would do well to look out for Warner’s calculated long-range shots.
However, another young man with similar liking for the long-range strikes is Golden Grove’s Kellon Croal, who has been consistent for his team in the midfield. With support for Kelvin Richardson, who has shown numerous glimpses of exceptional talent with the ball, Golden Grove look capable of upsetting the Milo 2022 Champions today.
The Guyoil final is slated for a 6pm kickoff, with a contest between Cummings Lodge and President’s College scheduled for 3pm. While the winners walk away with $500,000, the team placing second would reap $300,000; third place team collects $200,000, and fourth place pockets $100,000. The prizes would be given in kind, and not cash.
The Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers Tournament is also supported by MVP Sports. (Jemima Holmes)
