Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers league gets underway this Sunday
For the next seven weeks, eight secondary school football teams will vie for a chance to become only the third Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers champions.
The tournament will adopt its customary league format, going for one round and is set to kick off this Sunday, September 18, at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Speaking on behalf of the organiser Petra, Co-Director Troy Mendonca underscored the importance of the league format.
“It is a very important tournament. As you would know, any league format in any football arena is very, very important and I just want to express how delighted we are, to have our sponsors here with us, believing in us, the third year going,” Mendonca shared, while taking the time to extend gratitude to the title sponsors.
He went on to explain how the implentation of a league fits into Petra’s plan to develop the sport at the school level.
“At this point in time, I just want to ackowledge the importance of this tournament in our programme at Petra and what we want to achieve in the football spectrum at the school level,” Mendonca remarked.
The Milo Schools’ Under 18 tournament, which is usually held earlier in the year, gives school teams the needed exposure in the round-robin/ knockout format, while Guyoil’s tournament takes the top eight teams from that tournament, and intriduces them to the more gruelling league format.
Sharing remarks on Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers’ behalf, Communication and Promotion Officer (CPO) Saskia McClintock highlighted that she would be looking forward to an entertaining tournament.
McClintock said, “We’re very pleased to be here for a third time. We expect the teams to be very competitive, I love a competitive game and look forward to your best abilities on the game day.”
The Guyoil League begins this Sunday with four fixtures in place.
In the first game, Milo U18 runner-ups North Ruimveldt Multilateral will lock horns with Cummings Lodge Secondary. Christianburg Wismar and West Ruimveldt Secondary’s contest will be up next, while a battle between Golden Grove and Friendship Secondary will follow.
The final game of the day will be played between Dolphin Secondary and President’s College.
With Guyoil plugging in excess of $4 million into the tournament, the first prize, according to the company’s social media, is set at $500,000.
