GVF celebrates 2025 gains, eyes big regional volleyball push in 2026

President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation, John Flores

President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF), John Flores, has hailed 2025 as a landmark year for the sport’s development across the country while outlining ambitious regional and international plans for 2026.
Reflecting on the past year, Flores identified the hosting of the National B Division Tournament as the federation’s most significant achievement. The competition drew widespread participation and marked an important step in expanding volleyball’s reach beyond traditional strongholds.
“In 2025 the hosting of the National B División tournament was our biggest achievement, as it had some 1000 persons around the country participating in nine regions of the country except Region Eight,” Flores said. He noted that the tournament played a crucial role in strengthening volleyball at the grassroots level, particularly in hinterland and riverain communities.
“The Rupununi and Essequibo coastal communities really became fully involved and formed sub-associations,” Flores added, describing the development as a major boost to the federation’s long-term growth strategy.

Action from the End Game Beach Volleyball Tournament 2025

Looking ahead to 2026, the GVF president revealed plans to elevate Guyana’s presence on the regional volleyball stage. Among the key initiatives is the hosting of a senior Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) Championship, along with an international beach volleyball tournament involving South American countries.
“Next year we are looking to host a senior IGG championship and a beach tournament for South American countries,” Flores said. He confirmed that discussions on the IGG have already begun with neighbouring territories. “We have discussed the IGG already with Suriname and French Guiana,” he added.
Flores also disclosed that while Guyana has been invited to host the South American beach volleyball tournament, the federation first sought approval from the Government, which has since pledged its backing.
“While we were asked to host the beach for South American countries, we had to confirm with the Government, who have signalled their full support,” he said.
With increased participation, the formation of new sub-associations, and strong Governmental support, the Guyana Volleyball Federation appears poised to build on its 2025 momentum and position the country as a growing hub for volleyball in the region.
