GWCMC warns of closed-season ban on hunting several wildlife species

The Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission (GWCMC) has issued a reminder that the closed seasons for several wildlife species came into effect on May 1, 2026, during which hunting, trapping, wounding, killing, or sale of these animals is strictly prohibited.
In a notice dated May 6, 2026, the Commission listed the affected species as the brown capuchin, capybara, green iguana, marmoset, nine-banded armadillo, and Kappler’s armadillo.
The GWCMC reiterated that no person is permitted to engage in any activity involving these species during the closed-season periods. The restriction is part of the country’s wildlife management framework aimed at regulating use and supporting conservation efforts.
Earlier this year, the Commission had announced the 2026 open and closed seasons for wildlife, stating that the measures are intended to balance sustainable use with the protection of vulnerable species, particularly during breeding and recovery periods.
The GWCMC has warned that violations of wildlife regulations carry significant penalties, including fines and possible imprisonment, and has urged hunters, traders, and members of the public to comply with the established seasonal rules.
The Commission has also encouraged the public to remain familiar with the wildlife schedule for 2026 as enforcement agencies continue monitoring compliance across the country.
