GWI proposes countrywide replacement of distribution networks

Guyana Water Inc (GWI) Managing Director, Dr Richard Van West-Charles said that there was an urgent need for the replacement of all water distribution networks countrywide.
The call comes on the heels of the two breakages on Thursday in the water distribution networks at Vlissengen Road, in the vicinity of the Popeyes fast food outlet. The repairs to this distribution network are scheduled to be completed by tomorrow.
At a press conference on Friday, at GWI’s headquarters, Dr Van West-Charles said that within the past three months, there have been six breakages and 10 overall for the year. He disclosed that the last three breakages have cost the utility company $15 million. The breakages are a direct result of the aged pipe infrastructure that currently exists in Georgetown.
He added that “as we improve the water production for Sophia and central Georgetown, once those systems are up and running, it means that central Georgetown will receive higher water pressure, which can rupture the system”. It was also disclosed that the Public Utility Commission (PUC) has approved a fixed charge of $250 for the maintenance of all distribution networks countrywide. This charge is expected to come into effect from October 1, 2018.
“One of the things I would like to put to the (GWI) Board for approval is to have Central Government advance the cost for the replacement of these lines over a number of years, to be agreed upon. Also, that part of the fixed charge that comes to us is directed towards that cost,” Dr Van West-Charles stated. The Managing Director said the issue has engaged the attention of the GWI for the past two years, adding that it was imperative that the matter was addressed urgently.
