Handyman found dead in alleyway at Atlantic Gardens

A handyman, who did odd jobs for people, was on Sunday found dead in an alleyway in Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara (ECD). The dead man has been identified as 58-year-old Phillip Ketwaru of Lot 34 Mon Rose Seawall Road, ECD.

Based on reports received, the man might have fallen and sustained injuries but was left on the alleyway without anyone rushing to his assistance. He was found in close proximity to a businessman’s house with whom he worked.
At the scene, Kaman Ketwaru, the man’s son, told media operatives that his family would have received a telephone call informing them that he had fallen and was in need of medical attention.
The person on the other line was the businessman who the now dead man was working with at the time he fell.
The family members, however, arrived at the location about an hour later but by this time, the handyman would have taken his last breath. He was reportedly lying in a motionless state and was not breathing, the son stated.
The police were immediately contacted and the police arrived at the scene soon after. They would have examined the man’s body and escorted it to Lyken’s Funeral home for a post-mortem.

The alleyway where the man was found dead

One woman who lives close to where the man was found recalled hearing a moaning sound emanating from the alleyway. She reportedly went out to check but did not see anyone and as such, she went back in her yard.
Soon after, she explained that she saw a crowd in the alleyway and it was then she was told that someone had died. The police have since detained the businessman who Ketwaru was working with up the time of his demise.
The businessman’s wife reportedly told Police the now dead man was supposed to work on Saturday but he did not show up.
However, he showed up on Sunday morning claiming that he was not feeling well. She claimed that she told him to return home and come another day.
She told Police that the man jumped the fence instead of using the gate. It was while scaling the fence, he reportedly fell.
The police are continuing their investigations.
