Heritage Games open on September 21 at Everest

Indigenous Heritage month 2018 was officially launched under the theme “Proud of our Indigenous identity – celebrating in unity,” and one of the key items on the calendar of events is the highly anticipated Indigenous Heritage games.

Archery at Heritage Games is growing and is now an integral part of the games

The month long activities in recognition of the indigenous people of Guyana will reach its peak when the annual games commence on September 21 at the Everest Cricket Cricket ground on Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
The event has now grown to three days and will end on Sunday September 23 with the traditional male football final under floodlights. Over the three days, more than 500 athletes from the various regions of Guyana will converge in the nation’s capital, Georgetown to compete in archery, football, volleyball and cricket for bragging rights, trophies and cash prizes.
In 2017, Port Kaituma of Region One took the male football title while Parima of Region Seven ran away with the top prize in the female football championships. On the cricket pitch, Mahdia of Region Eight were declared champions and Pakuri of Region Four won the title in the female category.
On the volleyball court, Moruca of Region One made a clean sweep of both categories after some impressive performances.
In addition to the highly competitive events, athletes and spectators will have the opportunity of some fun with the novelty games throughout the three days. Some of the side attraction events are; fire wood bursting, fire lighting, lime and spoon, ‘gam,’ hot tuma pot eating, Piwari drinking, turtle tug-o-war and wrestling.
