The Carnegie School of Home Economics (CSHE) on Thursday reopened the doors of its Hibiscus Training Restaurant with a new batch of students who are ready to practice the skills gained under the various programmes at the institution.
Principal Myrna Lee related that the Board of Governors and Staff of the CSHE are seeking the public’s support to have the students practice skills demanded by the programme.
Lee noted that catering and hospitality are forerunner programmes. She added that the school understood the intersection between tourism, hospitality, and travel.
According to Principal Lee, the school is aware that tourists travel from one destination to another and have needs. She said that the CSHE would assist students to meet the mission of the school which states, “Carnegie is in the business of creating, developing, and providing international quality and excellence in the area of Home Economics and hospitality services through education, training, information sharing, networking, and collaboration.”
The Principal further noted that the school prepared students to deal with customers since each one of them must feel valued and must be treated with warm hospitality so that there would be repeat visits or recommendations of their service.
She said that students are trained to give this type of service by learning: to understand the needs of customers, to be loyal to customers, to find out what customers care about, and to lead in the hospitality industry by gaining insights into the best affordable customer service.
Principal Lee said that the Hibiscus Training Restaurant was one of the three main units where professionals from industry and facilitators collaborated to guide students in delivering their best to customers.
It was announced that the restaurant would be opened from 12:00h to 14:30h from Tuesday to Friday until April 2020.
Persons were urged to visit the school’s Facebook page since updates on menus, catering, and other services would be posted there.
Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) President Mitra Ramkumar told the gathering at the opening that with Guyana now being an oil-producing country, it must be recognised that tourism will play an important aspect.
