High winds damage 15 homes at Arau

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is coordinating a multi-sector response following reports of high winds that damaged several residential structures in Arau, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni). Preliminary information provided by the Village Toshao indicates that 15 houses have been affected, with damage reported mainly to roofs and other sections of the structures. According to the CDC, the figures remain subject to verification as assessment teams continue to determine the full extent of the damage to households and community infrastructure. The response is being coordinated by the CDC with support from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Police Force (GPF), Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and Arau Village leaders. The GDF has mobilised personnel and resources to assist with the response, while local and regional officials continue to provide information from the affected community. The ongoing assessment is expected to help the CDC identify priority needs and determine whether additional resources are required to assist affected residents. As an immediate measure, the CDC said it will mobilise an initial quantity of emergency shelter materials for households whose homes have been damaged. Additional relief supplies and assistance may be provided based on the findings of the assessment. The Commission has also indicated that it is prepared to establish emergency shelter arrangements if required.
