Hindu community has lost a great leader

Dear Editor,
On Tuesday, 10th July, at around 12:45 pm, I received the most repugnant phone call that ever made my day a very sad one. It is sad to say that the Hindu community has lost a great leader, friend, champion and role model, who will never be replaced but by the memories of joyful times spent in mandirs across Guyana.
Pandit Dewan (Deonarine Liliah) and I had shared wonderful moments of laughter and edifying conversations; and as a young pandit, I have gained much from this most humble and simple individual.
It is a time for all Hindus to reflect and pray for peace and unity for Guyana, a country that has now been placed globally by this horrible act of murder. This has left my mind very bitter wondering who’s next. So sad for Guyana and Hindus that a gem of religion is gone, especially in this manner.
Guyana was peaceful, but now even the streets are polluted with memories of crimes and violence. We need better security and protection for our citizens. We are not safe anymore; our families and children are not safe. Who is next, I wonder!

Sincerely,
Pt Surendranauth
