Hinterland tourism to benefit from birding tour guide course

Participants representing various hinterland villages, including Surama, Katoonarib, Yupukari, Kanashen, Karanambu and Toka, and organisations such as the Environmental Management Consultants Inc (EMC), the University of Guyana (UG), the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), Sophia Point Rainforest Centre, South Rupununi Conservation Society and Iwokrama, are currently benefiting from an Iwokrama/Drexel University Birding Tour Guide Course collaboration.
The course, which runs from January 7 to 12, 2026, covers several aspects, including the use of birding apps for ID and recording sightings, bird ecology, and tour guiding aspects.
According to Iwokrama, facilitators include Dr Jason Weckstein (ornithologist, Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University), Dr Brian O’Shea (ornithologist, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences), Waldyke Prince (top nationally accredited bird guide/biologist) and Josh Engel (ornithologist/Red Hill Birding).
