Windies will be eying a rebound win after losing the opener at Providence to a ruthless-looking Bangladesh when the second match, a day-night affair, bowls off on Wednesday afternoon.
Windies were handed their first loss of the tour thanks to Tamim Iqbal’s 10th ODI ton and some top innings from veterans Shakib Al Hasan who hit 97 and wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim who creamed 30 from 10 balls to take the visitors to 279.
Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman, who returned to the side, shared six wickets as they blew away the Caribbean side with the Captain bagging
four victims. With the historic day-night match just hours away, Windies will quickly need to rebound and regain their momentum from the Tests.
Guyanese Shimron Hetmyer made a gritty top-score of 51 after the second top-scorer Chris Gayle was run out for 40 and the Windies middle-order, which appeared shaky, failed to power their side home.
Skipper Jason Holder, following the loss on Sunday at the post-match press conference, blamed poor fielding among other factors for the loss, but anticipated a good comeback for the home team, as the series progressed.
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if the Windies, who left out Guyanese all-rounder Keemo Paul and opener Kieran Powell in the first game, tinker with a possible team change.
Jason Mohamed and Rovman Powell both failed the Windies in the first game as Devendra Bishoo and Alzarri Joseph, a spinner and a fast bowler, ended on 29 each and shared an unbroken half-century stand, which was not enough to save their team.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, are unlikely to change their winning combination as their side appeared well-balanced in the first game. Their batsman with the exception of Tamim, Shakib and Rahim will now be tasked with showing their skills come match two.
The Tigers will look to keep their momentum and go two up in the three-match series and rebound from the Test series loss while Windies will desperately want to shrug off any remnants of Sunday’s game and get their minds right ahead of the day-nighter set to bowl off from 14:30h on Wednesday, July 25.
