Home Sports HS Masters stun Regal Masters in last-ball thriller
Danny Mohanram and Samuel Kingston had crucial knocks that ensured HS Masters beat Regal Masters in the latest round of the Ink Plus/Crown Mining Enterprise/Elegance Jewellery Softball Tournament played last Sunday at the Gandhi Youth Organization (GYO) ground in Georgetown.
Playing in the over-40 category, Mohanram top scored with 38 (4×4, 1×6), while the more aggressive Kingston walloped 33 (2×4, 3×6) that saw HS Masters reaching the required target of 135 for the loss of five wickets off the last ball of their allotted 20 overs, to win by five wickets.
Defending the small total, Regal Masters were led by tight bowling from Mahendra Hardyal (4-0-14-2) and Parsram Persaud (4-0-13-1), which turned out to be insufficient.
When Regal Masters batted, they got a swashbuckling half-century from Eon Abel, with support from Rudolph Baker who made 25 (1×4, 3×6) and opener Mahesh Chunilall with 14 (2×4). Abel, who later bowled the important last over of the game, finished on 62 (4×5, 6×4) as Regal finished on 134-7 from 20 overs on the small but damp outfield.
Manoj Arjune was on target with the ball, bagging 3 for 16 from his four overs. He was well supported by H. Singh, with 2/18 from three overs.
The action will resume today at the Everest Cricket Club ground with six high-intensity matches. From 09:30h, Regal Masters will clash with Wellman Masters on Pitch One; HS Masters tackle Narine Masters on Pitch Two, and Essequibo Masters take on Success Masters on Pitch Three.
In the afternoon from 13:30h, Regal Masters meet Essequibo Masters on Pitch One, Parika Masters battle Fisherman Masters on Pitch Two, and RR Masters meet Savage Masters on Pitch Three.
The tournament, organized by the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc. (GSCL Inc.), has attracted the best softball teams in the country. They are playing for $100,000 winning prize in the Masters’ category and $50,000 in the Open Category. For the tournament, teams were not required to pay an entrance fee, but are responsible for the umpires’ fees.
