The highly anticipated Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the Guyana Olympics Association (GOA) is slated for today at the Association’s new head office at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown.
The entity which comprises of all the local Olympic and some non-Olympic sporting association is one of the most significant bodies in the sporting world and it is no surprise that today, what will have all ears batted to the news will be the results of the General Elections which is also on the cards during the AGM.
This will be particularly important based on the fact that the incumbent President, K. A. Juman Yassin has come under heavy criticism from various stakeholders. These criticisms come following the reality that Yassin has held office for 20 years since taking over from Justice Rudolph Harper in 1996 following four years as Vice President.
One of those criticisms would have been the constant failure of Guyana to secure an Olympic medals, only doing so once, long before Yassin’s tenure.
However, the irony amongst the criticisms is the likely possibility that Yassin will run for the post once again unopposed, on his way to the pole has already winning over a number of voters including President of the Guyana Amateur Basket Ball Federation, Nigel Hinds.
President of the Guyana Sports Shooting Federation, Attorney-at-Law Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon has stated openly that she will not be contesting the elections after word surfaced that she will be taking part in the event.
However, if Yassin is to be contested for the post, rumors are that he will be contesting against fellow Attorneys, Roysdale Forde and Nigel Hughes to name a few.
The election is expected to get underway by 17:00h.
