Thirty-four-year-old Gladstone Simmons, who with a piece of iron allegedly inflicted a brutal beating on his reputed wife Christina Totaram when he uplifted the woman from her place of work in the wee hours of January 21, and was taken into Police custody and questioned for the heinous act, is likely to be charged and placed before the courts sometime today.
Totaram, an East Bank Demerara resident, is still recovering from the injuries she sustained from that ordeal, and has said she is fearful that the man would return and carry out similar acts. She is calling for the Police to actively pursue her matter.
In images circulating on social media, the battered body of the mother of three was seen with black and blue marks on her hands, feet and back. She was hospitalised and bore several long stitches on her hand.
Still coping with a broken arm, Totaram claimed that Simmons became angry after she was having a telephone conversation which he assumed was with another man. The woman said that when she denied the man’s accusations, it angered him even more, and he began to beat her with the piece of iron.
Guyana Times understands that at least one other male was present when the woman was being beaten, but he apparently was too sacred to intervene.
