Following an exciting boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday night, promoter of the card “Sangre Malo” Aleem Hussain, hailed the support of the Guyanese boxing community.
The NextGen Global Marketing CEO told Guyana Times Sport on Sunday that he
was thrilled at the turnout the card received as seats were filled to capacity.
Hussain credited the success of the first international card in almost two years at the original home of boxing, to the media who he said were the foundation of getting boxing fans in tuned with the event on, on such short notice.
“The turnout was excellent; I think it was the largest crowd boxing has seen in almost a year and a half. I think that is partly due to the help the press gave us and our persons who have been promoting fights like this”, Said the promoter.
The card was filled with mixed bouts featuring different weight classes and demographic origins. Guyana in the end despite having secured wins courtesy of prizefighters; the “Bully” Elton Dharry and Dexter “The Kid” Marques, suffered mixed results but nevertheless Hussain cheered on the efforts of all the fighters.
“The fights themselves were excellent, I think it lived up to the hype there was no let down. We told the fans that it was going to be a great event and we delivered so if any boxing fan missed it they can only blame themselves”. He declared.
Guyanese debutant James Moore who won his match by knockout, earned the respect of the boxing enthusiast who hailed the upcoming fighter as a star; highlighting the boxer’s flair and animated personality as two of his best traits in ring.
“James Moore is a star in the making, he’s got style, he’s got charisma and you can see that he’s going to be a good showman. He’s going to be a great young heavyweight after winning his first big match by knockout in the most entertaining fight of the night, he really pleased the crowd”.
Not forgetting the Venezuelan boxers who were brilliant despite some size advantages and fighting experience, managed to also earn the respect of the Hussain who credited the visitors for “Going the distance”. “All fights went the distance, they showed heart and guts and that they were no pushovers.
Aleem concluded by confirming the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) and NexGen will team up again to host another fiery card billed for late February, possibly treating fans to a celebratory Mashramani Boxing event.
“With the success of this fight, we can look to February 23 or 24 fight somewhere in that range and the board are already in talks so we will make the announcement soon”. He ended.
