Dear Editor,
One can only wonder what is the understanding of the Mayor of Georgetown with regards to the meaning of the words ‘interventionist’ and ‘intervention’ which she used to describe the actions of the Local Government Minister who sought to restore good sense to City Hall in their recent proscribed land grabbing crusade in the Bel Air Park area.
How come the Mayor did not consider the Communities Minister and Central Government stepping in with a $25 million bailout to the City Council for the completion of repairs of Kitty Market to allow vendors to once again be re-located to their rightful places meddling in Council’s affairs? And this is in spite of a number of defects identified in the works completed by the Council, and the fact that a detailed work report is still to be presented to full City Council for notification of how the project was undertaken.
How come the Mayor did not consider the Public Infrastructure Minister and Central Government pumping in $472.5 million for the development of the Stabroek Market Wharf area meddling in Council’s affairs?
Why did the Mayor not object to the Central Government on the recommendation of the Communities Minister doling out approximately 400 million dollars to the two major garbage contractors to foot a bill created by City Hall and recklessly ignored for years?
Should the Mayor not deem as interference the maintenance of all of the roads in the city, the replacement of defective street lighting, the policing of the streets of Georgetown utilising the services of the national Police, the fogging of the City’s wards by the Public Health Ministry to keep down the mosquito problem, the clearing and maintenance of the drainage systems and outfall channels by Central Government of development and the 150 million dollars to rehabilitate the cemetery?
Paul Bamikole once said “Ingratitude makes man an animal, even worse, for some animals do have a way of saying thank you when you do them a favour; take a dog for instance.”
