Injury keeping Hetmyer out of West Indies teams to play Bangladesh
West Indies will be playing Bangladesh in three T20I and three One Day International matches in Dominica and Guyana from July 2. Four of those six matches will be played at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, where many home fans have been yearning to see the return of Shimron Hetmyer when the West Indies turn up at Providence from July 7.
Hetmyer has not been selected to participate in any of these matches, and according to WI Lead Selector Dr Desmond Haynes, Hetmyer is injured.
“Hettie has been having some injury problems, and we are hoping he can work to get himself fit and get back himself into the West Indies’ colours,” Dr Haynes said during Wednesday’s media interaction. “In a situation like that, I would have to defer you to the medical panel. What I have gathered is that he had one (injury) just before the Indian Premier League (IPL). Someone like Dr Oba Gulston will be able to answer that.”
Additionally, Hetmyer has not been given a contract with Guyana Harpy Eagles or West Indies for varying reasons. Hetmyer, who last played for West Indies in November 2021, had turned out for Guyana at the West Indies Four-Day Championships in February 2022, but has since featured only in the Indian Premier League, with the Rajasthan Royals.
A CWI media personnel had indicated that Hetmyer is being assessed, and his return date will be communicated. “Once he is fit, he will be able to return,” it has been said.
