Inmate chopped to death during prison brawl

…CCTV footage reveals killers

Police are investigating the murder of Aldryn Adonis, also known as “Shawn Peters”, an inmate of the Lusignan Prison, who was killed during a brawl.

Adonis was on remand at the facility on a simple larceny charge. Reports are at about 22:30h on Monday, Adonis and four other inmates were involved in a fight which resulted in him being chopped to his head, chest, hands and feet. The 40-year-old victim was reportedly in Holding Bay Two while the suspects were in Bay One. However, he jumped the fence which separates the two Bays and confronted the other inmates. Prior to the incident, Adonis was held in the isolation unit and was transferred to the Holding Bay on Monday. While there, an argument ensued over a previous incident.
Adonis was picked up by prison officials and taken to the GPHC, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but died at about 10:45h on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a review of the CCTV footage from the location as well as other CCTV footage obtained allowed the prison authorities to positively identify the perpetrators.
Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels revealed that a partial search of the prison by Prison Officers on Monday unearthed the improvised weapons used in the stabbing and chopping. An additional 111 improvised weapons and nine cellular phones were also found.
“Improvised weapons are materials or items which have been converted by the prisoners into weapons for the sole purpose of maiming and threatening officers and fellow prisoners,” Police said.
A thorough investigation is ongoing. (G9)
