Welcome to another exciting feature from the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, as we continue to explore Surya Namaskar. Well, actually, you have completed the routine of Surya Namaskar, since the last set of postures are a repetition of the first three postures. We hope that you have been practising these postures, and not turning a blind eye to this Yoga feature. Therefore, if you were practising, we would not have the need to go through these three postures again. However if you were not, or you were unable to get your hands on a copy of this newspaper, then today’s feature will certainly help you a great deal.
Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian pose)
Breathing in, bring the right foot forward in between the two hands, place left knee down to the floor, press the hips down and look up.
How to deepen this yoga stretch
Place the right foot exactly between the two hands and the right calf perpendicular to the floor. In this position, make a gentle effort to push the hips down towards the floor, to deepen the stretch.
Hasta Padasana (Hand to Foot pose)
Breathing out, bring the left foot forward. Keep the palms on the floor. You may bend the knees, if necessary.
How to deepen this yoga stretch?
Gently straighten the knees, and if you can, try to make your nose touch your knees. Keep breathing.
Hastauttanasana (Raised Arms pose)
Breathing in, roll the spine up, hands go up and bend backwards a little bit, pushing the hips slightly outward.
How to deepen this yoga stretch
Ensure that your biceps are beside your ears. The idea is to stretch up more, rather than stretching backwards.
Tadasana (Palm Tree Pose)
As you exhale, first straighten the body then bring the arms down. Relax in this position, observe the sensations in your body.
However some persons would usually go into Pranamasana (Prayer pose), as shown in the picture on the right.
Remember that June 21 is slowly approaching, and as the old saying goes, “Time waits for no man”. We trust that you are taking Yoga seriously, and not looking at it as a passing fad. Do not just go into yoga because one of your favourite Bollywood actors/actresses is doing it, or because one of your friends or family members is doing it. Once you understand the benefits of Yoga and how it helps you as an individual; trust us, you will definitely find yourself waking up early and doing some form of yoga. We here in HSS understood the importance of Yoga completely, that is why we can encourage persons to give Yoga a try. We have been doing Yoga work, and you can too.
