Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, has disclosed that the Public Health Ministry plans this year to intensify collaborative works with international partners, in order to meet critical needs in the health sector.
This announcement has come following a discourse between the Public Health Ministry and the Flying Doctors of America, represented by Dr. John Arledge, its Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
In the meeting that was held on Wednesday, Minister Cummings stressed the importance of collaborative works with such organisations in order to meet the medical needs of Guyanese citizens — especially those in remote areas, who may not have access to the specialist care that they need.
“We want to work with you as much as you want to work with us as well, so it’s a real partnership. We want our needs to be met. We need to clarify logistics so both parties can gain,” the minister stated.
She also touched on the dire need for foreign specialist treatment, as she noted the need for capacity building is high on the ministry’s agenda. Also in attendance at the meeting were Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) Dr Karen Boyle; Deputy Director of Regional Health Services, Dr Ineka McKenzie; and Coordinator of the International Desk, Mr Denroy Tudor.
