Home News Intoxicated man drowns while swimming in old mining pit
The lifeless body of a miner was on Wednesday pulled from an old mining Rock Creek Backdam, Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) hours after he went swimming.
The dead man was identified only as “Tommy Lee”. Police stated that on the day in question, the now-dead man turned up at Vanessa’s Mining Camp under the influence of alcohol and conversed with a colleague.
Soon after, he went to swim in the old mining pit which is about 20ft away from the camp while his colleague reportedly went into the kitchen to do some work.
However, after some time had elapsed and he did not return, the colleague went to look for him but he was not seen. Police stated that the man’s body was subsequently discovered in the pit.
He was reportedly pulled from beneath the water in a motionless state. The police were contacted and a rank, on arrival at the scene, checked the body for marks of violence but none were seen.
Investigations are ongoing.
