The International Shotokan Karate Federation Guyana (ISKF-Guyana) has successfully completed its first grading exercise for 2026, with 130 students earning higher Kyu ranks following two days of assessments at its National Park headquarters dojo.
The grading, held on Thursday, March 26 and Friday, March 27, was conducted under the supervision of Sensei Christopher Chaves (6th Dan), who led the technical evaluation of participants. The exercise also featured students from several partner institutions, including Georgetown International Academy, New Eden School of Excellence, and Canadian School of Arts and Science.
Among the standout performances was Jonathan Butters, who secured a double promotion from 8th Kyu to 6th Kyu after demonstrating strong discipline and technical ability during the assessments.
The two-day programme also saw notable achievements at the senior level, with Britney Bettencourt and Christopher Harrison earning promotion to Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt). Their examination, conducted on March 27, assessed the core elements of Shotokan Karate – the Kihon, Kumite, and Kata. Both candidates were praised for their execution, speed, and power throughout the process.

ISKF-Guyana credited the success of the exercise to the efforts of its instructional team. Support was provided by Sempais Marlon George, Alex Rodrigues, Kristalia Chaves, Kristian Chaves, Brandon Yong, Justin Sampson, Feonia Yong, and Jessica Callender. Additional assistance came from senior black belts Stephanie Kerry, Talitha Kissoon, Rosita Katchay, and Mena Chetty, along with junior black belts who helped coordinate the event.
The organisation said the programme formed part of its continued focus on discipline, character development, and technical growth within the local karate community.
